RBS Emerging Artist Award
Dane Lovett is the recipient of the 2010 RBS Emerging Artist Award
The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) in Australia today announced Dane Lovett as the winner of the RBS Emerging Artist Award 2010 for his painting Twelve Years. Lovett’s acrylic on canvas was selected from this year’s exhibitions which displayed over 50 works across a broad range of media.
Lovett will receive an acquisitive prize of $10,000, his work forming part of the RBS Australia corporate art collection. In addition, Lovett will be granted an international development programme and an around-theworld airline ticket.
This year’s judging panel comprised Edmund Capon (Director of the Art Gallery of NSW), Glenn Barkley (The Museum of Contemporary Art Curator) Helen Pynor (Australian contemporary artist and winner of the 2009 RBS Emerging Artist Award) and RBS Executives Stephen Williams (Country Executive) and Peter Young AM.
On presenting the Award, Young expressed his sincere thanks to the artists, representative galleries and judges who all contributed to the success of this year’s Award.
“Once again we have been privileged to showcase Australia’s gifted emerging contemporary artists. This year’s entries were all of a very high standard and we want to thank everyone involved for making it another success,” he said. Of Lovett, Young added “Dane is a very talented young painter and we wish him all the best for the future.”
In describing Twelve Years Barkley said “It is a monument to the obsolete. It is so interesting in that it is painting about the redundant digital world.” Barkley added “Dane is a young artist but a painter too proving that painting still has something to say.
The judges also commended Jacob Walker, Emma White and Locust Jones.
